#1473   Christening Gown and Slip

c. 1800-1820   United States

Materials: Fine cotton, corded cotton.

Condition: Excellent condition on gown's front and slip. The gown's back has several period mends; near the neckline are three small brown scorch marks, which have caused the fabric to split.

Measurements: Wd, 17"; Gown L, 23".

Comments: The hand stitching on this gown is remarkably tiny and even.  Beautiful work, especially in the van dyke edgings and tiny quadruple rows of horizontal pin tucking on the gown and slip. In the early 19th c. parents often chose to wait until the baby was a year or older before christening; hence, the somewhat large size of this set. Rare and early.
