#1871   Child's Bustle Outfit

Materials:
Bonnet: plaited straw, brim wire, velvet ribbon, cotton net with needle run lace, cloth rose. Bodice and Skirt: peacock blue silk taffeta, velvet brocade, 16 crochet buttons, cotton twill bodice lining, 5 steel stays, glazed cotton and stiffened buckram linings in skirt, wool hem tape.

Condition: Bonnet: Excellent, straw in perfect condition, flower faded. Bodice and Skirt: Very Good. In the bodice, near the right wrist there is a 1" X 2" area of fading in the blue silk; under the right sleeve near the armpit there are several 1" tears tears in the fabric (only visible when arm is raised up).  In the skirt's back bustle pouf, there are several tiny pin holes and one 1/2" tear; also, occasional wear to the silk along the hem's turned edge.

Measurements: Bonnet: 6" X 6" X 6". Bodice: Sh-Sh, 12.5"; B, 25"; W, 21"; Slv L, 18.5". Skirt:  W, 16"; L, 20.5"; Hem C, 42".

Comments: In the 19th century a fashionable young miss would wear an outfit in the same styling to her mother's clothes. The one concession to childhood was that a child's skirts were allowed to be quite a bit shorter than an adult's. A spring bonnet and dress such as these must have made some young girl very proud of herself as she ventured out for a stroll
