#0893   Point de Gaz Flounces   c. 1860-1880

  France

Materials:
Pair of sleeve or pantalette flounces. Ecru linen thread, entirely handmade needlelace.

Condition: One flounce perfect; the other has one 1/2" hole and a small brown stain.

Measurements: Each flounce is 7.25" Deep x 30" Around (no visible seam)

Comments: Somewhere I read Point de Gaz needlelace described as, "fireworks in fairyland". This could easily describe the pair of flounces offered here. The Point de Gaz needlelace is finely worked in naturalistic floral designs set in repeating decorative scrolls inset with snowflake-like needlelace medallions. The lace is worked in three weights of linen thread, which gives it more depth and shading than usual. This is extraordinary quality 19th century French lace.
