#1922   Wedding Hankie   c. 1840-1860

United States

Materials: Linen cloth, cotton thread, 2.5" Valenciennes lace.

Provenance: Wedding handkerchief of Idella P. Kendall. Idella was a descendant of Rebecca Kingsbury Gay (1713-1807) of West Dedham, Massachusetts. The Kingsburys, Gays and Kendalls were all prominent Massachusetts families in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Condition: Excellent. There is a 1/2" brown stain at the edge of the embroidery; a couple of tiny breaks in the linen by the embroidered florals (easily mended). These are very minor problems, the hankie is in incredible condition.

Measurements: 21" x  21".

Comments: A gorgeous mid 19th century over-sized wedding hankie. The embroidery is magnificent - 3 dimensional with intricate needlelace fillings. The workmanship is all hand done including the Val lace edging.
