Materials: Cotton net; handmade laces: linen and cotton thread.
Provenance: Antique veil purchased in
1947 by Patricia Chapman to wear in her wedding.
Condition: Excellent. There are some late
19th - early 20th c. mends in the net and one tiny brown spot at an outer edge.
Measurements: Rectangle: 72.5"
X 80"
Comments: Two types of handmade
lace were used to create this cream colored veil: Duchesse bobbin lace and
Pointe de Gaz needlelace. The majority of the toile (design) is made up of the
delicate bobbin lace worked in airy floral motifs and garlands. The designs
along the veil's perimeter are worked in the more substantial Pointe de Gaz
needlelace as are the larger leaf patterns found throughout the design. The
reseau (net) is a six sided mesh called fond simple. This heirloom wedding veil
is an exquisite example of late 19th century lace artistry.
