Italy

Cream linen thread.

Comments: On the Italian island of Burano, some of the finest European needlelace was produced in the 18th c. In the 1870s this lace industry was successfully revived. In 1900 Mrs. Neville Jackson, author of Old Handmade Lace, wrote, "only the choicest and most beautiful kinds of lace are made at Burano at the present day."  The fabulous handmade needlelace collar offered for sale here corroborates Mrs. Jackson's claim!
