#1442    Shoulder Brace
   c. 1870

United States

Materials:
Tan polished cotton, silk ribbons, boning, brass eyelets, elastic, cotton binding tape and brown polished cotton twill lining.

Condition:  Excellent.  The elastic cording in the shoulder bands has deteriorated. Most of the silk ribbon is missing from one shoulder lacing and there is one break in the ribbon where it laces up the center back.

Measurements: 13 1/2" x 12"; waistband width 30".

Comments: Shoulder braces were used in the 19th century as an aid to correcting posture, especially for developing young figures.  This brace is expertly made by hand.  The boning may be whalebone, it feels too thick to be steel.  This is a very rare item of clothing!  To see a picture of a later period's shoulder brace, please refer to pg. 20 of Stella Blum's Harper's Bazar 1867-1898.
