#0089   Woman's Stays
  c. 1786

United States

Materials:
Brown cotton, natural homespun linen, light blue linen tape and thread, 68 pieces whalebone.

Provenance: There is a note written in ink pinned inside the stays which reads, "Grand Mother's stays when she was 17 years old.  Her maiden name was Elizabeth Baker.  She married Captain Jacob Coatie when she was 17.  She died in 1849 aged 80 years.  Elizabeth Baker Coatie, b. 1769 - d. 1849, probably was the wife of a New England sea captain.

Condition: Excellent for their age.  Shoulder straps missing. Some staining on the linen lining.  Two 1" cuts between the 3rd and 4th waist tabs on each side and a few stays missing.

Measurements: Width open: B, 29"; W, 21.5"; Center Front L, 12.5"; Center Back L, 16.5".

Comments: The needlework is precise and very well done on these stays - a geometric wonder!  Stays from this period were sometimes sewn together in the front and laced close in the back.  To see nearly identical stays (dated 1775), please refer to pages 47 & 49 of The Kyoto Costume Institute's exhibition book, Revolution in Fashion, 1715-1815.
