#1906  Lace Evening Mitts  c. 1820-1840

United States: MA

Materials:
Cream silk, cotton embroidery.

Provenance: These mitts trace back to the descendants of a prominent Massachusetts family:  Rebecca Kingsbury (b. 1713, d. 1807) of West Dedham, MA.

Condition: Perfect.

Measurements: 4" X 18".

Comments: As early as the 1780s knitting was produced by machine; these mitts are an example of this early production. The simple embroidery at the wrist edge and along the upper forearm is hand done. Long evening mitts were in fashion up until about 1840, when a much shorter style came into favor.
