Provenance: These came from an estate in the Saugerties, NY area along with another pair of lady's mitts, item #2433. Condition: For their age, excellent. Right mitt has 3 tiny hole and 2 larger (.25" and .5") holes. Left mitt has one pea sized hole and 5 much smaller ones. Both mitts have a dingy appearance and a few old, small repairs. Measurements: Mitt L, 11"; Hand C, 7.5"; Upper Arm C, 10". Comments: Early hand knit fashion items are scarcer than scarce. These linen mitts were made by an accomplished knitter. An intricate repeat of diamonds and interlocking parallel bars makes up the body of the pattern. Each mitt's top border has a knit monogram and date worked into it: "R M R 1787". Whether you collect American 18th century fashion or examples of early knitting, these lady's mitts are an important find.
