2433   Embroidered Mitts  c. 1790-1800

  United States

Materials:

Unbleached cotton muslin, tan embroidery floss, metallic thread, brass spangles, silk ribbons.

Provenance: These came from an estate in the Saugerties, NY area along with another pair of lady's mitts, item #2432.

Condition: For their age, excellent. Muslin is foxed (brown spots) and stitching on the outside seam of the right mitt has unraveled.

Measurements: Mitt L, 16"; Hand C, 7.5"; Upper Arm C, 10.5".

Comments: Fingerless mitts preserved a lady's modesty while allowing freedom of movement for the fingers. These charming summer mitts would have been worn with one of the fashionable muslin dresses of the period. Trailing floral design is delicately embroidered in a tambour stitch embellished with tiny spangles. Very rare late 18th c. fashion accessory.
