#0179   Wedding Gown
   c. 1880

United States

Materials:

White figured muslin, woven with small, six point stars; needle run embroidered lace, 7 whale bone stays, moiré silk ribbon, wax flowers and faux pearl buttons (not original).

Condition: Very Good.  One faint light smudge at the bodice; right above the waist; also on the left front bodice is a mend in the muslin (!" X 1/2") where there were 2 small holes. These are hardly visible as they have been tacked to the white lining below Some small holes under the bottom skirt flounce.  There is a 1.25" X 1/2" mend in the back folds of the bustle and a long line mend on the right sleeve.   Neither mend is obvious.

Measurements: Bodice: Sh-Sh, 14"; B, 34"; W, 27"; Front Bodice L, 21"; Center Back Bodice L, 34"; Slv L, 17". Skirt: W, 26", Front L, 42.5";  Back L, 46"; Hem C, 85".

Comments: Small patterned fabrics, like that found on this bustle gown, were popular in the late 1870s and early 1880s.  The diminutive all over star pattern is charming, and is repeated in the design of the net lace.  The gathered overskirt, constructed at the back of the skirt, creates a full bustle on this wedding gown.
