#1856   Beaded Purse
   c. 1870s

United States

Materials:
Glass beads, brass beads, silk floss, cotton thread, gray silk crepe lining.

Condition: There are 3 small holes in this bag; one is pea sized the other two half that size. These holes are difficult to see because the gray lining masks them well. The rest of the purse is in excellent condition.

Measurements: 5.5" Wd x 7.5 L; Fringe, 1.5".

Comments: The beads on this purse were hand knit together forming its intricate design. The top was worked in crochet with matching color cording for the draw-string. The white background beads are opalescent. These 19th century beaded purses are getting harder to come by; most have disappeared into private and museum collections.
