#2562   Corded Petticoat  c. 1840-1850s

  United States

Materials:

White plain weave cotton, white cotton cord.

Provenance: Deaccessioned from a Massachusetts museum.

Condition: Excellent, one pea size brown spot.

Measurements: W, 26.5"; L, 38.5"; Hem C, 106".

Comments: Hand sewn from materials at hand - perhaps cotton sheeting and clothesline. Stitches are fine quality and regular. The petticoat was made from two pieces of cotton; the seam joins are selvage to selvage and nearly invisible. Above the top row of cording is a substantial tuck which shortened the petticoat's original length by four inches. Utilitarian, every day garments are more difficult to find than their fine and fancy cousins.
